Title: Rua moko in Red

Mixed media and acrylic on boxed board

Location -Owned by Amanda Downing, Perth, Australia

The Rua moko series represents duality and the two differing views of the modern Maori to the outsider, being split into a tribal, indigenous race and still having to function in a modern European world. The relief glue panels give the dimension of carving in a contemporary way, accentuated by metallic highlights. I wish to explore modern techniques, and materials from the point of view of my Ancestors, including the paradox of materialism and earning a living, and quantity and speed Vs. quality and craftsmanship.
