This is a symbolic representation of the ozone layer, and its function of separating the nourishing swirling winds from the land, from the life threatening atmosphere that surrounds us in outer-space. We give little thought to our dependance on the Earths atmospheres life sustaining properties, to the point of abscent-mindedly punctured holes in it.
